Muddled

A slumbering SKOB Senior team were punished by a far sharper Old Brighton who took full toll in the first quarter and all but put the game to bed by the first change. Despite a fight back in the second term, the tonners were always able to hold SKOB at bay and ran out deserved 20 point winners. Earlier, the Ressies fell in by the merest margin in a thriller that puts their season back on track, and the Stingers were able to comfortably account for the Panthers in the morning match. Over at Old Rigret it was a carnival atmosphere that culminated with an Academy monstering of Old Scotch to celebrate Slammin Sam Doyle's 200th game in the tricolours. The SKOB Dogs had set the table with a gutsy come from behind win over the 'fields. On Friday night the 19 SD1's scraped home by a point, but the opposite fate befell the Premier lads on Saturday morning as they went down by the same margin to square the mini series with the Beders. The SD3's took revenge over Monash, beating them on their home deck. Kew was a venue of highs and lows for the Saints. The Blues raising the bat in a 100-0 pasting, but the Bears had the better of our Saints Gold in the feature. Finally, at twilight, the Green Dream went askew as Ormond partied harder on the Winter Solstice and took the win at EE Gunn. Overall it was another 7 from 11, but losses to our two Senior teams took the shine off on a fine day for footy.

Brighton start brighter to bag the pot

Reigning premier Old Brighton claimed a pair of wins over SKOB in Season 2026 with victory at TH King on Saturday. In the process they jumped back over SKOB to third on the table as our Seniors slipped back to fourth. The game was played in very different conditions to the Round 2 match between these two, but followed almost the same script. Brighton started with a bang and registered 5.7 to a single goal by the first break, leaving SKOB to play catch up for the remainder of the contest. Similar to that Round 2 contest, SKOB outscored the tonners over the next three terms, but again, the damage was done. Brighton's ability to jump out of the blocks and get scoreboard pressure on early, ultimately meant SKOB were chasing tail for the day and never really got back in it.

The standard of play throughout was high, despite the conditions not exactly helped by the glue pot in the centre of the ground. Despite the ball getting a decent dousing every time it made it back to the middle, it didn't get overly heavy, and kicking and marking skills were still a high standard. Coming in to the game staring down a third consecutive loss, Brighton made sure that wouldn't happen with the fast and clean start. The High St end was the favoured way of going and Brighton got the better of that opening term, but SKOB did lift in the second and brought themselves back into the contest with a lift in intensity and some surer handling. Nearing time on in the second they got back to under a kick, but leaked a late one then missed a few to hit the sheds a goal down.

At the main break it looked like SKOB might overrun their visitors, but Brighton were far more efficient in the third. They made the most of their chances when they came, whilst SKOB were left to rue some very gettable opportunities - registering 0.5 for the quarter and finding themselves a long way back at the final turn.

A quick goal within 90 seconds to SKOB should have provided the spark, but unfortunately Brighton had already kicked one on 45 seconds and the margin was always stretching out, with SKOB only ever able to answer Brighton's goals, and not get back to back scores as they so desperately needed.

The tonners took the win and it was well deserved. SKOB will need to regroup and bounce back next week at the College, where they'll face Old Trinity. The loss plonks the Seniors back to fourth on the table, when a win would have seen them second. Still a long way to go as we have only just turned the halfway mark of the season.

SKOBs Hold Firm in a One-Point Thriller

SKOBs boys returned home after a record-breaking win against Old Haileybury, looking to continue their good form in their clash with Old Brighton at TH King Oval.

 The game began as a heated contest, with both teams vying for the early ascendancy, and the boys appeared to thrive under such conditions. It became a tight and physical game, which led to minimal scoring opportunities. However, the boys took their chances in front of goal, with a beautiful snap from Dante Tomarchio and a snag from Lucas May helping the SKOBs to an early two-goal lead.

 The second term arrived and the physicality of the game continued to shine as the contest became more evenly balanced. It was clear that the game was going to remain close throughout the afternoon, with both teams refusing to give an inch. Despite the opposition working their way further into the contest, the SKOBs boys managed to hold their lead heading into the half-time break.

 Coming out of the half-time break, the intensity of the game spiked, with both teams placing a high value on winning first possession of the footy. With scoring proving difficult to come by, the scoreboard gradually levelled out as the contest tightened. Despite the boys trailing by a point, they were well placed heading into a barnstorming finish.

 Everyone's eyes were on the fourth quarter, with the slimmest of margins separating the two teams. The boys knew every contest, every tackle and every one-percenter would have a significant impact on the outcome, and it showed in their play. The desperation shown by the SKOBs was pivotal in tying up the game early in the quarter. Henry Kemp managed to kick a crucial goal, and shortly afterwards the boys secured a handy point to extend their lead to seven points with only five minutes left on the clock.

 Despite Old Brighton closing the gap with a goal of their own, the reserves held strong as the SKOBs managed to cling to a one-point lead, securing a hard-fought win in a low-scoring classic.
