Doubling down in Uni Town

The SKOB winning streak stretched out to five this weekend as the Seniors led all day to record their second victory at the Uni Oval this season. The Uni has proven a happy hunting ground in 2026 for Coach Lynch’s mob, who stayed far enough out of reach from Uni Blacks to keep things comfortable for their traveling supporters. It wasn’t such a happy spot for the Ressies who ran into the red hot Uni Blacks twos who have taken all before them this year and sit atop the tree. Over at Old Rigret our Saints faced a red hot opponent too, with Old Scotch getting the better of both the Saints Gold and Blue, but there was better news at Basil with the Saints Green Machine powering past De La. At TH King there was triple delight for the Under 19s with all three teams saluting in their respective matches. The SD3’s got the party started with a strong win over the Sharks, before the SD1’s put in a brutal performance to put paid to De La’s resistance and salute by over a ton, then Coach Greeny’s Premier boys finished the feast with a good win over Uni Blues after a very even first term. Our three’s had a good weekend with the Academy too strong for the Snow Dogs and the Stingers continuing their dream run with a win over Old Brighton at the St James postage stamp. The SKOB Dogs couldn’t quite match it with Uni Blacks, but overall it was a healthy 7 from 11 for SKOB on the weekend.
SKOB go wire to wire
From the opening bounce SKOB Seniors looked on against the ever dangerous and unpredictable Uni Blacks. Following a tremendous Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, the two teams locked horns and got down to business. SKOB were sharp early and had the first two on the board from set shots before a smart crumb by Will Mazzeo answered the Blacks first goal and that was the pattern of the day. For the first three quarters SKOB were able to get the first goal and the last with honours even in between. The collective six goals gathered at the start and end of each quarter pretty much made up the margin at the final change, and although Uni were able to break the cycle in the final term, SKOB were then able to string three in a row - the only time either side was able to do that in a quarter all day - such was the swings of momentum shared between the teams. The three goal streak in the final term also giving SKOB their biggest lead and an advantage that wasn’t going to be hauled back in on this day.
Where there's a will...
It was a good day to be a William at SKOB, with no less than 4 Williams in their team. Coates, Pfeiffer and Mazzeo were three of the finest Williams, whilst Angus Hart, Cam Hodges and Dougie Kerr (with 5 goals) also performed well for the Seniors. All sides now take a break for the long weekend, before returning to battle through the deep dark winter. With SKOB now firmly in the top four, they’ll be looking to freshen up over the break and hope to continue the winning streak beyond 5 games.

A Brave Effort Against Strong Opposition
The SKOB boys returned to action at University Oval, looking to continue their streak of good form against the undefeated Uni Blacks. The rain held off, and the city skyline created a picturesque backdrop for spectators and fans.
The game commenced with the SKOBs boys on the back foot, with the opposition gaining the early ascendancy. However, as the quarter progressed, the boys found their rhythm and began playing their brand of football, launching several attacking passes that resulted in goals from Hugh Williams and Lucas May. In the latter stages of the quarter, the game turned into a congested affair, and the boys worked hard to keep the margin close, trailing by just eight points at quarter-time.
The second quarter began with the ball spending much of its time in the defensive half. The boys were under constant pressure as the lead began to grow, but Angus McQuie was the general of the back six, keeping his composure and leading the defensive line superbly. Alongside his fellow defenders, he prevented numerous attacks from turning into easy scoring opportunities. Despite the intense conditions, the boys' effort never wavered, keeping the score to a manageable level with another goal from Lucas May.
Heading into the second half, scoring opportunities began to dry up, and the game became a battle of stoppages and contested ground balls. Despite the SKOBs boys lifting their intensity, it was difficult to gain a clear advantage, both in general play and on the scoreboard. In spite of their efforts, they managed a crucial solitary goal by the end of the quarter to keep the game alive. As the game entered its final stages, the boys were unable to maintain the sustained intensity required to overcome the deficit.
It was a tough day at the office for the SKOBs, but their heart and resilience could not be questioned. We now look forward to a well-earned bye and the opportunity to attack the second half of the season, pushing for a finals spot.
